Critique of the Christian Holman Standard Bible

By Jason Young

1 . This so-called "bible" is taken from the same set of manuscripts as all the rest. Here is the link to show where they translated the Christian Holman Standard version from which is Nestle-Aland (27 TH edition). The "same set of manuscripts" consists of many variant readings that come from Aleph and B via Westcott and Hort. Also, the NA 27 inserts A.V. receptus readings that the earlier Nestle editions omitted.

"Dr. Blum and Mr. Shepherd supervise a worldwide team of more than 90 scholars, translators, editors, and English stylists from team headquarters in Dallas and executive headquarters in Nashville . Translators are working from the Nestle-Aland Greek text (27th edition) for the New Testament, and the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (4th edition) for the Old Testament." http://www.lifeway.com/lwc/article_main_page/0,1703,A%253D152437%2526M%253D150036,00.html

2 . The editor in chief is the same one that translated the New King James Version; which is a Receptus translation, not a Nestle (Looks like someone is playing both sides of the fence). One translation he uses Nestles and in the other he uses the On that note the readings are the same in some verses in the RSV and the ASV due to translation where the text reads the same. This is not a New King James but rather the same old readings from an rsv and an asv.

Dr. Arthur Farstad was the General Editor of the Holman CSB® from the time he began the project in 1984 until his death in September 1998. Dr. Farstad also served as the General Editor of the New King James Version. http://www.lifeway.com/lwc/article_main_page/0,1703,A%253D152437%2526M%253D150036,00.html

3 . DOUBT-LADEN FOOTNOTES
The CHSB, like many other modern translations, contains many doubt-laden footnotes such as:

  • 'Many mss. (manuscripts) do not contain this verse.'
  • 'The earliest mss read.'
  • 'Some ancient mss add.'
  • 'Many ancient authorities read.'
  • 'Not found in the most of the old mss.'
  • 'Some mss insert.'
  • 'Some ancient mss do not contain.'

The question is, if the text they are using to translate this so-called bible does not contain the verse then why insert it? I can tell you why; it is because they want to trick the Christian into thinking they have a true bible when it is a fake. They want to cast doubt on the WORDS OF GOD so that you have to come to them for what the bible really says. It is all a matter of final authority and they do not want to submit themselves to the text the Lord has blessed and used: the KJV 1611.

4 . From a child we are read stories about David and Goliath and how David slew the giant Goliath. However as we see in a CHSB David didn't kill Goliath!!!

(CHSB) 2 Sam 21:19  Once again there was a battle with the Philistines at Gob, and Elhanan son of Jaare-oregim the Bethlehemite killed 1 Ch 20:5 adds Goliath the Gittite. The shaft of his spear was like a weaver's beam.

(KJV) 2 Sam 21:19 And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.

5 . The most disturbing error in the CHSB is the fact that they make our God and Saviour JESUS CHRIST a sinner in Matt 5:22:

(CHSB) Matt 5:22

(KJV) Matt 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

If this scripture is true in the CHSB this makes God and Jesus Christ a sinner. This also means that your salvation is no good. Jesus Christ is also in danger of hell's fire. This is all very important if you are trusting Jesus Christ to get you to heaven. If this is all true Jesus Christ could no more save himself than the pope. Paul also would be guilty for he taught the Christian to be angry and sin not (Eph 4:26 ). He also called people fools (1 Cor 15:36 ). You see how much trouble you get into when you remove the phrase "without a cause".

Mark 3:5 And when he had looked round about on them with anger , being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched [it] out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.

Mat 21:12 And Jesus went into the temple of God , and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,

Luke 12:20 But God said unto him, [Thou] fool , this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?

Matt 23:17 [Ye] fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?

Matt 23:19 [Ye] fools and blind: for whether [is] greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?

Luke 11:40 [Ye] fools , did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also?

Luke 24:25 Then he said unto them, O fools , and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:

6 . Missing verse?

•  Acts 15:34

7 . Attack on the trinity.

•  (CHSB) 1 John 5:7 For there are three that testify:

(KJV) 1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

8 . Test to see if the Christian Holman standard version is of antichrist.

*Test 1 for the antichrist. Is Jesus the Christ ?

(KJV) 1 John 2:22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.

(a) (CHSB) John 4:29  "Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could this be the   Messiah ?"

(KJV) John 4:29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ ?

Other references where "Christ" is omitted or change in new versions are as follows. John 6:69, John 4:29 , Acts 19:4, 1 Cor 9:1, 1 John 1:7, Heb 3:1, Phil 4:13 , Rom 1:3, Eph 3:14 , 1 Thes 3:11 , 2 Thes 1:8.

*Test 2. Is Jesus the Son of God?

References are as follows. John 9:35, Gal 4:7, Eph 3:9, 3:14, Col 1:2, John 6:69

(a)(CHSB) John 9:35 When Jesus heard that they had thrown the man out, He found him and asked, "Do you believe in the Son of Man"

(KJV) John 9:35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?

* Test 3. Is Jesus Christ come in the flesh?

Or (a)(CHSB) 1 John 4:3  But every spirit who does not confess Jesus Other mss read is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist; you have heard that he is coming, and he is already in the world now.

(KJV) 1 John 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that [spirit] of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

Conclusion

This should be enough to convince any serious student who is seeking the truth about the WORDS of God (Ps 12:6-7). God has preserved his words (plural) in the King James Authorized Version. This should also teach the student that he should not touch the Holman Christian Substandard so called bible. As far as the text is concerned it says David didn't kill Goliath. Second it says Jesus Christ is a sinner. Third it destroys the trinity. Last but not least it is connected to the antichrist.
